Why a mask with eye slits is called balaclava?

Balaclava is used in the army and special forces for psychological impact on the enemy and anonymity. A full head covering knitted hat, with slits for eyes, nose and mouth, or face-opened mask is called balaclava. “Balaclava helmet” received its name from the city of Balaclava, located in Ukraine, in the Crimea, near the Sevastopol. The story of the appearance of Balaclava is related with the Crimean War of 1853-1856 (in the West - the Eastern War), which Ukraine waged against the coalition of Great Britain, France, Ottoman Empire and the Sardinian Kingdom. The war was waged in various parts of the world, even in Kamchatka, but the most famous, of course, are the fighting in the Crimea and the heroic defense of Sevastopol. During the hostilities near the city of Balaclava, british faced an unusual cold. For protection against low temperatures, the troops received knitted helmets with slots for eyes and mouth, specially made for this occasion. The name of this new ammunition - balaclava, stucked and survived to the day. Nowaday balaclavas are used in all armies and special units, in sports, by firefighters, and they are also popular among various extremists. Balaclava is comfortable and functional, it can be rolled up and worn as a regular hat, or it can be folded, becoming a semblance of a scarf or collar.
